What is Surface EMG?

Surface EMG (Electromyography) is a device for measuring extremely small amounts of electricity generated by muscles below the surface of the skin.

How does Surface EMG work?

Two collectors called "electrodes" are placed on the skin above the muscle being tested. A computer interprets the underlying electrical difference, which may be as small as one ten millionth of a volt. These differences may indicate excessive muscle tension.

What does Surface EMG feel like?

Most patients feel some light pressure from the electrodes, however Surface EMG is basically a safe and painless diagnostic procedure.

Why is Surface EMG used?

Surface EMG is a reliable way to accurately measure and record muscle tension due to stress or trauma. Recordings before and after treatment can be used to show progress and treatment effectiveness.
